After a dramatic and disappointing 2016 in which Romania failed to qualify a team for the Rio Olympics and walked away empty handed, Catalina Ponor wins her fifth European title on the balance beam in front of the home crowd in Cluj-Napoca. Ponor performed a difficult and beautifully executed routine to score a 14.566 and was emotional as gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci awarded her the gold medal (x).

With a score of 55.765, Great Britain’s Ellie Downie becomes the European All-Around Champion. She especially excelled on her best events, vault and floor exercise, where her program included a solid DTY and an impressive Silivas. Downie burst into tears as she realized that she had won her first senior European title and she went on to win three more medals in event finals.

Favorite Moments of 2017#10

After a disappointing qualifications round where she failed to qualify for the all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam finals, Russia’s Angelina Melnikova becomes the European Champion on floor exercise with a score of 14.200. Melnikova tumbled a double arabian, double layout, piked fill-in and double pike to win Russia’s only gold medal on the women’s side at these championships (x).
